This week

What the market is waiting for

Central bank decisions, inflation prints and employment data, in the order they land. Filter by date, country or impact, and read the consensus against the figure that actually arrives.

  • High impact

Rate decisions, CPI, non-farm payrolls. Spreads widen and price can gap through a stop.

  • Medium impact

Sentiment surveys, trade balances, second-tier growth data. Moves the pair, rarely the trend.

  • Low impact

Minor revisions and routine prints. Worth knowing about, rarely worth trading on its own.

Using the calendar

Reading a release before it lands

A calendar tells you when volatility is scheduled. What you do with that information is the part that decides whether a news day helps or hurts.

  • The surprise moves the price

Markets price the consensus long before the release. What moves a pair is the gap between the forecast and the actual figure — and how far that gap sits from what traders had already positioned for.

  • Know the hour, not just the day

Liquidity thins ahead of a major print and returns in a rush after it. Check the release times against the session you trade, and treat the minutes either side of a high-impact figure as their own market.

  • Size for the gap, not the average

A stop is an instruction, not a guarantee: in a fast market it fills at the next available price. Position size is the control that still works when a release moves fifty pips in a second.
